OPASCOR gears up to deliver optimum quality in port services, always!

altORIENTAL PORT & ALLIED SERVICES CORPORATION (OPASCOR), is a workers’-owned and -operated Filipino company providing port services to vessels calling at the Cebu International Port (CIP) of Cebu City, Philippines. Established in 1990 by its workers-owners, OPASCOR’s expertise in delivering cargo-handling and allied port services has been honed through more than two decades of experience.

 

In 2008, OPASCOR acquired brand new fumigation and truck scale facilities through its fully owned subsidiary, Diadem Terminal Maritime Realty Services, Inc. and now provides round-the-clock container fumigation and truck scale services to all port users daily as a welcome addition to its growing business portfolio.

Far from the crude cargo handling equipment OPASCOR once utilized in its operations, OPASCOR now deploys state of the art equipage in delivering its core services. In fact, it has just recently completed the conversion of its three gantry cranes from analog to digital. With said units fully upgraded, equipment performance is expected to substantially improve and their downtime significantly reduced thereby resulting to an expected over-all increase in productivity. Aiming to increase its efficiency in handling bulk cargoes, OPASCOR built in 2009 Cebu’s first bulk handling facility which became commercially operational in June, 2010. Referred to as the Cebu Bulk Grain Terminal (CBGT), said Php250 Million facility is equipped with two units of 10-Tonner grab clamshells, hoppers, conveyor system, automatic bagging machines and three units of conical giant steel silo. The conveyor system is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 300 tons per hour including the flow rate of all hoppers. The combined bagging speed of all four bagging machines is at a whopping100 tons per hour. In an effort to further push the delivery of quality output, OPASCOR also installed in 2008 an automated information system for the management of its container yard. Currently, said system is being further enhanced so it can better support its end users in the efficient delivery of their tasks and functions.

altFor its commitment to deliver quality port services, OPASCOR received various awards here and abroad. In 2010, OPASCOR received the “B.I.D. International Quality Crown Award” at London, UK for business success and excellence in the Philippines. Considered as the “Oscar of the Business World”, this award allowed OPASCOR to join the elite group of B.I.D. Awarded Members, a family that exists throughout 178 countries around the globe composed of companies dedicated to a culture of quality. In the Philippines, OPASCOR received the “2010 Consumers Choice Category Awards for Business Excellence” by the Gawad Parangal sa Pilipinong Maagap for being the most trusted name in the cargo handling service industry in Metro Cebu. In Cebu City where OPASCOR is based, it was awarded for the second time the “Taxpayers’ Outstanding Moment Award” by the City of Cebu in recognition of its being one of the Top 20 taxpayers in the city under the business and real property category. With the recognitions given its way, OPASCOR has become more persistent in ensuring the consistent delivery of quality service to port users.

In 2010, it also started working on further enhancing its quality management systems to obtain an ISO accreditation by end of 2011. With a marked increase of 12% in containerized cargoes serviced by OPASCOR in 2010, all its’ innovations and quality improvement efforts could not have been more timely undertaken. For 2011, OPASCOR looks forward to an upwelling of cargo traffic as the world economy recovers. Further, the Cebu Port Authority is now pursuing the dredging of the Mactan Channel entrance fairway up to the CIP berth area. Once completed, an upsurge of bigger vessels calling at the CIP can be reasonably expected. In anticipation of the surge, OPASCOR’s top management is keen on seriously augmenting its equipment inventory by acquiring a brand new quay crane and two more yard cranes. Needless to say, OPASCOR is gearing up to welcome future positive developments or challenges with eager preparedness, ready to deliver optimum quality in port services, always.
